Carl Froch has urged Liam Smith to hang up his gloves after he was knocked out by Chris Eubank Jr. in their rematch last weekend. He also said that Eubank was “the best I’ve ever seen him”.
The second fight between the British rivals ended in a stunning upset. Liam Smith, who had knocked out Eubank in the fourth round of their first encounter in January, was floored in the same round and then finished off by the referee in the 10th.
Eubank was impressive throughout the fight, landing a strong jab and a variety of uppercuts on a sluggish Smith.
“He was amazing against a very poor Liam Smith. I don’t want to take anything away from Chris Eubank Jr. because he did very well, but Smith looked like he was done.”
“I thought he was fine at 160 pounds. Clearly not. He shed 42 pounds, so he can’t go back to 154 pounds. He has to stay at middleweight, and he can’t move up to super middleweight; he’s too small. But at middleweight, you saw what happened to him. He can’t cut it.”Carl Froch
Froch suggested that this could be the end of Smith’s career.
“It could be a setback for his career. He had a great career. He’s 35 years old; he got beaten badly because he couldn’t make the weight, so I think this is it for him.”
Froch went further and said, “Liam Smith looks finished at 35. He can’t make 160 pounds; he’s 35 years old and had a career at 154 pounds, so if he can’t make 160 pounds, what is he going to do? Move up to middleweight; he’s not big enough.”
So for me, his career is over.Carl Froch
