The threat first materialized five minutes into the game as Rashford entered the penalty area from the left side, dribbled, and fired a low effort that Jason Steele wonderfully blocked. After several minutes of the United players’ rhythm being slowed down and calm ball passing in the back areas, Brighton was able to contain their players’ exuberance.
As the game settled down, the visitors made the decision to launch a quick attack that culminated in a ground cross from Adingra that Welbeck met with a direct touch into the goal, giving the visitors the lead with the opening score. Welbeck attempted to score again for his former team, but his long shot flew over the crossbar.
Rashford was close to scoring against Brighton with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, but his ball hit a defender and turned into a corner. Rashford sent a cross from the left side towards Hojlund, who received it and put it into the goal easily, before the goal was disallowed after reviewing the video technology, as it turned out that the ball came out and crossed the line before passing it to the Danish striker.
Rashford started again with the ball from deep in the field before shooting with all his might, but his attempt failed after the ball went wide of the goal, and the half then ended with visitors leading (1-0).
The beginning of the second half witnessed some dangerous attempts, most notably from Rashford, who fired a powerful shot that hit the net from the outside. Gross penetrated into the penalty area after receiving a pass from Lamptey and handled the ball calmly before preparing it for himself, launching a creeping low shot, which Onana failed to block, strengthening Brighton’s lead with a second goal.
Rashford tried to try his luck by taking a free kick from a distance with a direct shot towards the goal, but Steele easily caught the ball. Lamptey launched the ball on the left side before sending a cross to Joao Pedro, who received the ball and shot hard into the net, increasing the visitors’ lead with a third goal.
A few seconds later, United responded with the first goal, through Tunisian Hannibal Mejbri, with a powerful shot that landed inside the net, and the match flared up again. Despite the goal, United were unable to exploit it to put pressure on the visiting team, as Brighton succeeded in absorbing their enthusiasm and preventing them from reaching dangerous areas in the final minutes.
